I hit Cmd-v to paste. Nothing. Or maybe its something I copied a few minutes ago. So I do it again. Copy. Paste. Nothing. Copy. Paste. Nothing. Copy Paste Nothing. Copy Paste Nothing. Copy Copy Copy Copy Copy Paste Nothing. Copy Copy Paste AHHH! It FINALLY FUCKING WORKED! Sometimes it seems to work if I first cut something in a native buffer, like there's some sort of corruption in the clipboard and it has to be cleared. The only thing that works consistently is pasting into XEmacs and using its explicit Edit->Copy menu command. Its CUT AND PASTE! How hard can it be, Apple?!

Consider this: X11 was released in September 1987. That's 17 years ago. It *STILL* can't reliably cut and paste anything except text even when I'm only working inside of X. And even that doesn't always work. Screw X. If I could convince the office to spring for a G5 (I'm getting close), this Linux desktop would be out the window. Darrell

I'll bet it's copying from the X clipboard and not the X selection. Which is why it works when you explicitly Copy it to the clipboard first. I get the same problem copying from an X11 server (Exceed or Xoftware, either) on Windows. It seems to be a standard problem when trying to deal with the X11 schizo selection-vs-copy issue.

I haven't done exhaustive testing, but what I find tends to works is using X techniques in X and mac techniques in the mac world. I.e. copy with cmd-c in a mac app, paste into the X terminal window with a middle button click (or in a different context, ctrl-y in emacs). That said, it would be nice if the mac stuff could work in apple's X11. Damn, I'm just entirely too reasonable. I apologize for being insufficiently hateful. dha

I'm talking about the other way around. Highlight in an xterm, copy with cmd-c, paste into mac app. NOTHING! > Damn, I'm just entirely too reasonable. I apologize for being > insufficiently hateful. I have enough trembling rage for you.

Now let me go back to hating make and VMS.

Cmd-C doesn't put anything in the X11 clipboard either, it copies out of it.

Then why does it work if I bang on cmd-c a lot?

I suspect you're doing something somewhere in there to clear or set a clipboard that convinces the server to use the selection instead. I have problems like that with X11's two different copy-and-paste mechanisms confusing server programs on Windows as well, so I'm not surprised.
